A key strategic advantage of FU is its ability to move quickly and effectively, especially in response to critical situations. We are a small team of highly experienced and adaptable journalists.
FU had already been working with key covert activists in Myanmar as democratic conditions worsened in the 18 months before the February 2021 military coup. When the generals then restarted their brutal rule, FU offered to provide urgent help to activists researching the kleptocratic ambitions of the military rulers.
We then deepened our existing relationship with Justice For Myanmar. Within 24 hours of the coup, we set to work, not just providing expert technical follow the money advice.
We also:
Gave general editorial guidance to ensure balance, accuracy and good storytelling
Used our extensive contacts to help place stories in leading international media outlets
Helped exiled journalists find asylum
We have led the way in exposing the Myanmar military’s powerful business interests.
Our numerous stories prompted the suspension by TotalEnergies of dividends paid to the junta, sanctions by the US on Myanmar’s state oil and gas company, and the suspension of trading in a Singapore stock exchange company.
Media coverage has been secured in Le Monde, New York Times, Suddeutsche Zeitung, Reuters and others.
We have continued our working relationship with Justice For Myanmar mentoring researchers, conducting joint investigations and, crucially, strengthening their editorial processes so they can be sustainable. We also work with leading independent outlet, Myanmar Now.
